Magic Realism in New England: The Mesmerising Work of Andrew Wyeth
On Saturday 16th August a small group of 10 members joined together in Pankow, Heynstraße 8, and visited a quaint little museum to discover about chair cane designer/manufacturer Fritz Heyn.
The museum is actually the former Heyn family home which along with the interior formed what I believe commonly known in Berlin as a Beletage. The whole experience gave one the impression of what life would have been like in the early 1900s. The museum consisted of 5 rooms the first being the grand dining/entertainment space with many artifacts from the Heyn era along with photographs of the family at the house. Over time the original house contents have been lost and the museum relies on input from people who have information about how the house looked and has changed over the years.
The 2nd and 3rd rooms show the living room and kitchen both set out using furniture and utilities similar to those in the Heyn era. The old bathroom is rather special and is a major luxury showing their wealth compared to how some of their neighbours would have lived at that time. Our guide was very informative and did well to describe the story of the Heyn family and answered any questions showing his knowledge about the house and its residents!
It is a small tour but if you have an hour or two to spare it is a little gem to be found in Pankow. Following the visit we all went to the nearby Cafe Paula and enjoyed lunch and coffee and enjoyed some great conversation and stories among us all. Here’s looking forward to another quirky tour in the coming year. Who knows, it might just be in Pankow again!!!
