SUMMARY:London\, New York\, St Ives: The Avant Garde in Cornwall 1939 to 1964
DESCRIPTION:The arrival of Ben Nicholson\, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo in St Ives at the beginning of the Second World War marked a significant moment\, both for them and for the artists already living and working in the small Cornish town. These three artists were key players in British modernism and soon challenged the status quo of the existing artists’ colony\, established at the end of the 19th century. They inspired and\, in Hepworth’s case employed\, a younger generation of artists before they too were challenged by new ideas. This lecture will chart the rise of St Ives as a centre for modern art after the war and show that it was not only Nicholson\, Hepworth and Gabo who achieved international success but other artists such as Peter Lanyon\, Roger Hilton\, Terry Frost and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. This success led to the town becoming a focal point for post-war avant-garde art which led the eyes of the modern art world to focus\, for a brief period\, on St Ives. \nLecturer: Sarah Burles \nSarah Burles\, theartssociety.org \nSarah Burles studied History of Art at Cambridge University before doing a master’s degree at University College London. She went on to have a career in museum and gallery education\, establishing new services in three different museums before working at the Fitzwilliam Museum for many years. Sarah is the founder of Cambridge Art Tours\, which runs tours and courses in and around East Anglia\, as well as online. She is a Tour Director for an award winning travel company and has led tours to Italy\, France\, Germany\, Belgium and America. Sarah became an Arts Society accredited lecturer in 2021 and\, since then\, has given lectures and run study days for Arts Societies throughout the UK\, as well as in Germany\, Holland and New Zealand.

SUMMARY:Alfred Hitchcock’s London: Shaping a City for Suspense
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture we will learn how the great film director Alfred Hitchcock used London\, and how it influenced his life and his art. Still both instantly recognisable and widely acclaimed over 40 years after his death\, Hitchcock’s greatest and bestremembered movies are usually selected from his Hollywood days. However\, he spent almost exactly half his life in London and Essex\, and the influences of these formative years on his later work were enormous. From his inventive use of London locations in the 1920s and ‘30s in classics such as The Lodger and The 39 Steps\, to his inspired deployment on film of the West End’s theatre stars\, Hitchcock never forgot the city. And as it helped shape his life and imagination\, so he shaped it on the cinema screen. \nLecturer: Richard Burnip \nRichard Burnip\, theartssociety.org \nRichard took a BA Hons in English Language and Literature from the University of Manchester\, followed by an acting diploma at the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama. He combines acting\, writing and lecturing. He has lectured in many venues including the National Army Museum and the Museum of London\, as well as presenting a variety of virtual lectures online. Richard has contributed to\, among others\, The Journal of Popular Film and Television\, The Sherlock Holmes Journal\, and the P G Wodehouse journal Wooster Sauce. A specialist in voice work\, he has narrated numerous television documentaries and 180 audiobooks.

SUMMARY:The Car in Art and the Car as Art
DESCRIPTION:Speed! Technology! Destruction! The battle cry of the Futurists WWI heralded the appearance of the car as a powerful symbol in avant-garde art. Soon the Art Deco masterpieces of the great car builders came to epitomise style\, luxury and craftmanship\, works of art in their own right. The romance of speed continued to be a major theme in how cars were depicted in art\, but\, since the 1950s the car has become art\, used as a canvas for artists as celebrated as Peter Blake\, Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst. This lecture will showcase the beautiful and the bizarre\, celebrating the dynamic\, creative\, and sometimes unsettling relationship between cars and art. \nLecturer: Julian Richards \nJulian Richards\, theartssociety.org \nI studied archaeology at Reading University and have since worked as a professional archaeologist\, in commercial archaeology\, for English Heritage\, for the BBC and as an independent. I was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1992 and have an honorary doctorate. I have long been involved in teaching and outreach projects\, lecturing widely in continuing education\, to schools (with a focus on special needs pupils) and societies. My career in broadcasting involved researching and presenting Meet the Ancestors and Blood of the Vikings for BBC2\, and Mapping the Town for Radio 4. I have written a number of English Heritage publications on Stonehenge\, including the previous and current guide books to the monument and landscape. Museum work includes curating Stonehenge related exhibitions in the UK and abroad (Germany and Austria) and I have just curated the new permanent ceramics gallery for Salisbury Museum. With no intention of retiring I am still passionate about Stonehenge\, pots and old cars.

SUMMARY:Bottoms Up! A History of Wine\, Its Rituals and Its Vessels
DESCRIPTION:This light-hearted talk examines the history of wine\, an elixir that has sustained much of humanity for almost 10\,000 years. Essentially little more than fermented grape juice\, this extraordinary and contradictory liquid has caused wars and riots\, has helped broker peace and more commonly\, served as an aphrodisiac. It has been personified in the form of Gods and been the principal catalyst in civilised entertaining and dining rituals. Wine is based on ethanol\, a potent alcoholic poison and depressant. Yet\, when consumed in moderation\, its effects are liberating\, euphoric and positively beneficial to our physical health. \nLecturer: Andy McConnell \nAndy-McConnell\, theartssociety.org \nHas dealt in antiques since adolescence\, but served an apprenticeship in journalism. After working in music\, film and television\, he returned to writing in 2004 as the author of the acclaimed tome The Decanter\, An Illustrated History of Glass From 1650. He followed this in 2006 with Miller’s‘ 20th Century Glass. He has written for journals as diverse as The Times and Glass Circle News and ran Britain’s largest antique and vintage glass gallery in Rye\, Sussex. He is best known as the glass specialist on BBC’s evergreen Antiques Roadshow.

SUMMARY:Blenheim Palace – Christmas Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Christmas at Blenheim Palace has always been a time of celebration. Those traditions are in many ways still continued to this day. This talk looks at how Christmas has been celebrated over the years and how each November\, the Palace and its grounds are transformed into a Christmas feast for the eyes. \nLecturer Antonia Keaney \nAntonia Keaney\, theartssociety.org \nAntonia joined Blenheim Palace in 2008 as a member of the Education Team\, later becoming the Palace’s Social Historian and Digital Content Creator. Both roles have involved her curating or co-curating a number of Palace exhibitions including A Passion for Fashion – 300 Years of Blenheim Style upon which her recent book is based.\nAn experienced public speaker\, both virtually and in person\, Antonia has delivered a ‘Conversation’ at Cumberland Lodge\, Windsor\, been ‘In Conversation’ with fashion editor Caroline Issa\, designers Stephen Jones and Zandra Rhodes and TV and radio presenter\, Sue Perkins.\nAntonia has participated in both the Oxford Literary Festival where she presented her children’s book and more recently at Cheltenham where she chaired a discussion between authors Emma Soames and Rachel Trethewey on their respective Churchill related books. Antonia has been a guest on Radio 4’s Saturday Live with the Reverend Richard Coles and has made various TV appearances including Channel 5’s The Cotswolds with Pam Ayres and Blenheim Palace – Behind the Grandeur.
